The Paleo Diet Food Lists
Using the Paleo diet correctly calls for us to look back at how our pre-historic ancestors went about feeding themselves. In those ancient days our forbearers spent their time eating the freshest available meats, vegetables and fruits. The food list that made up their diet was made up by what was available. The choice for us is to forego the process foods and stick to eating fresh foods instead. By doing this, you can achieve excellent health and vitality.
For obvious reasons, the caveman ate what was available. We on the other hand have a million choices. Unfortunately the list of modern foods is crowded with processed garbage that has little or no health value. Included on this “foods to be avoided” list are high fat meats like chicken wings, processed deli meats, breakfast sausage, salami, chicken and turkey skin, bacon, pepperoni, high fat pork and lamb chops and possibly worst of all, Spam. Avoiding any of the foods on this list will do you a power of good.
Remember that our Paleo ancestors lived before organized agriculture. Unlike us, they didn’t consume cereal grains and wheat. Therefore, the Paleo diet food list doesn’t call for foods like barley, corn, millet, oats, rice, rye wheat and wild rice. Even the “gluten-free grains are not on the approved list. They just don’t fit in the Paleo diet. There’s a long list of products made from these grains that modern man consumes in great quantities. None of them are included in the Paleo diet. Bread, cakes, muffins and cookies, corn chips, corn on the cob, corn starch, corn syrup, donuts, flat bread, muffins, pasta, pancakes, pita bread, pizza, quinoa, rice cakes, rice flour, rice noodles, rice pudding, rolled oats, rolls, rye crackers, and tortillas. For many people, cutting these products out of their diets is the hardest part of following the Paleo diet.
There’s a long list of foods on the “no go” list. On the other hand, there are so many foods that you can eat and enjoy! Experienced Paleo diet followers know there’s a huge variety in the ingredients you can use to create wonderful meals full of flavor and health-giving nutrients. Paleolithic Man did not have dairy products but they did have eggs. I’m a huge omelet fan. I love omelets loaded with veggies such as mushrooms, onions and tomatoes. Healthy snacks are easy. Raw vegetables, fresh fruits and nuts make fantastic and healthy snacks. Why not try homemade guacamole for an in-between meal snack. It’s actually really easy to make and packed with good stuff. It’s also delicious. Whenever possible, try eating these snacks without dairy based dipping sauces. They’re healthier that way. For the carnivores in the crowd, they’re a multitude of meats you can eat. Whenever possible, try to source meats that come from free run and grass fed animals. That’s not always possible so if you can’t find it, go for the leanest cuts available to fill your menu list.
One of the many advantages of sticking with the Paleo diet is it will slow down your digestive system. You be full for longer time periods and actually eat less. You’ll get used to eating only when you’re hungry. It’s no big deal if you skip the odd meal. Your system will tell you when you’re hungry.
